Pan Seared Cod with Sauteed Summer Veggies

As you all know, Whitney took a cooking class at the French Culinary Institute this summer. Every Saturday she would spend the entire day on her feet, learning how to braise, saute, pan sear, and other things awesome and francais. Not only did she make delicious food, but she usually brought it home for me to try! One Saturday evening, Whit came home with pan seared monkfish and sauteed vegetables. The fish was white and flakey and the veggies were buttery and tender. Everything was mouth watering. So when I was ambling around whole foods last night, looking for something to make for dinner, I immediately thought of this delicious meal and decided give it a go.  The fish counter didn’t have any monkfish so I bought cod instead. They’re both white fish with a similar texture so I figured they would cook in relatively the same manner. I also bought my favorite summer vegetables: summer squash, zucchini, and orange cherry tomatoes. Taking a hint from Anthony Bourdain who says that every cook should always be …

Rel’s Ravenous Review of The Blue Water Grill

This July 4th I went to The Blue Water Grill. I had never been to this restaurant before; for me, it has always been characterized it by its bold red awnings that line 16th street and Union Square West. Although it is surrounded by a multitude of restaurants like Republic, Heartland Brewery and even Toasties, it has a slightly different appeal because it’s main attraction is of course, the seafood and raw bar. The atmosphere is also more upscale with its white tablecloths and well dressed patrons who seem to be tourists, looking for a quiet break from the New York masses, as opposed to Union Square locals. The outdoor seating at Blue Water Grill is probably its greatest asset. Sitting outside will land you in prime “people watching” position, but far enough away that you avoid the loud chatter of the busy farmer’s market. The restaurant has a special brunch menu which offers breakfast and lunch specials from 10:30 am to 4 pm on Sundays. We made the window and were impressed to see …

Whit’s Tidbits: Tilapia with Honey Scallion Dressing

I am very weird about which types of fish I will eat and which I will not. Mostly I like uncooked fish, like raw fish in sushi–I’ll pretty much eat any type if it comes wrapped up in some seaweed and rice! But when it comes to fish that is actually cooked I am VERY picky. I pretty much only eat tilapia and salmon. I think my palate is starting to mature a little so I’m getting better about eating more varieties of our gilled friends, but for now I like the most bland and non-fishy fish. Again, if you give me tuna tartare I will eat it in about 2.5 seconds–I love it, but if you sautee that same tuna filet then you best find me some chicken to eat! Anyway, the other day when Ariel and I were tooling around in the grocery as we normally do I saw that they had Tilapia on special so I picked some up and made some for dinner a few nights ago. I didn’t want to …
