Clean Cleanse: Week 2 Recap + Vegetable Lasagna

Yes. You read that correctly. I made a CLEAN lasagna with the help of the clean cleanse blog. Of course I found a way to work pasta into the cleanse, you didn’t think I’d converted completely, did you? But fear not, I didn’t break the cleanse with this lasagna as you will see in the recipe below. Recapping week 2 – this will be much shorter than last week’s as the week continued on much like week 1. This week the temptation for me was more alcohol than food. I had a pretty hard week and I really wanted a glass of wine at the end of the [every] day. However, I resisted. Mostly for fear of shaming myself to everyone at work and all my friends if I broke the cleanse, but still. I also had the strong urge to just pig out on something. You know when you eat way too much pizza, chinese food, ice cream, anything and you feel horrendous afterward but you just couldn’t stop yourself from pigging out? I missed …

Salty/Spicy/Sweet Noodles

Clean Cleanse: Week 1 Recap + Salty/Spicy/Sweet Noodles

Don’t worry we aren’t turning into a health blog! Just giving some healthier options in time for Spring cleaning. First up, my recap of week 1 on the cleanse followed by a recipe for Salty/Spicy/Sweet Noodles! Hint: they’re not actually noodles…Skip to the bottom if you just want the recipe! Let me preface this recap by saying that for those of you who I don’t know personally, I work in events for a restaurant group and catering company. As you can imagine, this isn’t the most conducive environment for any type of restrictive diet. This week was especially trying as I had events almost every night of the week and each one with a food item I had not yet tried. GREAT TIMING. A sampling of the things I didn’t eat: croissant apple cinnamon bread pudding with caramel sauce, my FAVORITE mac n’ cheese in hors d’oeuvres form, a porchetta slider on focaccia, a 6′ muffaletta hero, and a remoulade macaroni salad. Did. Not. Eat. Not. A. Single. Bite. Or. Taste. I think if I …

E.V.O.Oh my gah I’m in Italy! (1)

So I actually made these Snack Mix Bars before I left to come to Firenze but I’m here! To steal Rachael Ray’s phrase (ugh never thought I’d say that) EVOOh my gahhh I’m in Italy! It is absolutely GORGEOUS here and the food is AMAZING! I think the Italian language is so beautiful and I am thrilled to be able to study it (and the cuisine) in a place like Florence! More about the food here later. For now: Snack Mix Bars. I found these on Inn Cuisine back in September, yes these have been on the “to bake” list for a while. To my surprise these are actually a no bake bar! I’m not sure why it surprised me when I actually got down to making these but yes, in fact, they are a no bake. This combined with the fact that they are addictingly delicious makes them a must make! A must make, no bake, heh. The only thing bad about these chunky bars is that you do have to let them sit …

Leftover Alert: Peppermint Bark Chunk Cookies

I’m just gonna second what Ariel said: sorrysorrysorry for not blogging. My bad. That’s really all there is to say about that–life just got in the way in the form of finals, goodbyes and packing. Yuck. You do not wanna know what our diet consisted of for that last week, no time for grocery shopping does not suit us well. But, we made it! Did you? It’s the end of ’09, that’s probably good too, but can you believe it? I think every year goes by faster. I can’t believe that this semester ended, I won’t be returning to New York, we already had Christmas, tomorrow is New Year’s Eve and I’m going to Italy in 2 weeks! Errrrrrrrrr yikes–fun, but yikes. Some parts of me, the parts that don’t crave fresh pasta, caprese salad and wine, wish it wasn’t time yet!  Oh yeah, and I hope Santa was good to y’all, I got this beautiful beautiful stand mixer I have been cherishing for like mmm a year. Loveeee it. But before I can even …

POM Wonderful Brownies

A few weeks ago the people at POM Wonderful asked if they could send us some bottles of POM juice to experiment with in recipes. Who are we to turn down free stuff? It’s a recession y’all! Rest assured we would never spend the time blogging about something that  we didn’t feel the need to share with our readers, but the POM recipe was, well, wonderful! First up, Double Chocolate Pom Brownies. I’ve been wanting to make brownies for while now and due to a time crunch yesterday I needed to make something quick and easy. Bars and brownies are the perfect quick baking fix because they don’t require shaping dough or frosting (normally). You just whip up the batter and pour it in a pan–for this reason, I am bar obsessed. I also love bars because I feel like you can throw as much chocolate, sugar, and candy in them and they’ll always turn out scrumdiddly-yum-cious. I am for sure on my way to getting diabetes. Regardless, the POM brownies were a perfect solution. …

Lookie at my Cookies: Pink Lemonade Cupcakes

So Welcome Week is officially over and school has started. Meaning we are now trying to piece together our schedules and figure out where to fit in time for friends as well. So far it’s going pretty well, except for the whole class thing. I think this is the least prepared I have been for school–normally I spend hours in Staples picking out school supplies like an excited middle schooler. This year…not so much. I had to call friends for an SOS to look at my schedule for me and figure out what room/time I had class. Oops! Oh well, it’s kind of liberating actually.   So far classes are looking pretty good. I’m taking a few Food Studies classes that I’m really excited about and then a few others that I’m…eh…less excited about. Gotta take the bad with the good I guess. Anyway, in an effort to start off my year the right way I’m getting ahead and writing this blog post early! (Okay so it’s really only the night before I would’ve …

Lookie at my Cookies: Chocolate Whoopie Pies with White Chocolate and Salted Caramel Buttercream Filling

Well here I am a week later after this post and I’m sitting in the same place I was when I wrote that post, still staring at boxes that I have yet to unpack. Oops! Time flies when you’re having fun, or when you’re preoccupied with Mad Men. Yeah yeah my marathon catch up on LOST finally ended and I needed a new show to catch up on. Mad Men peaked my interest since it’s about advertising in the 1950s. I am really interested in PR & Marketing for food associated products and I also find advertising intriguing–and who isn’t a sucker for the glamorous style of the ’50s. It just makes me wanna wear fluffy skirted dresses, classy pumps, and red lipstick! Anyway, point is, Mad Men is pretty good but it’s no LOST (duh). Catching up on tv, working, and ordering cookbooks have kept me way too busy to have time for unpacking! Like how I slipped that one in there…ya know, just in case the ‘rents are reading this. More details on …

Lookie at my Cookies: Oreo Cookie Cookies

Has anyone seen the new “Next Iron Chef” promos on Food Network? They just came on and let me say Alton Brown is so fetch. That’s the only word I can think to accurately describe him, fetch. If you haven’t seen Mean Girls then here’s your def courtesy of Urban Dictionary: “Variation and shortening of the word ‘fetching’. Used to describe something cool and trendy. General usage by females, teeny-boppers. You can almost hear it replied with “Like, totally!” Coined by the movie Mean Girls“. Alton is like so totally fetch and so are these new promos. Good job FN. I gotta say I love Alton, but I am not into this southern character that is in the episode of “Good Eats” that’s on right now. Has anyone seen the gumbo episode? This guy is rather confrontational and loud…not liking his style. Hm. I’m sure Alton’s gumbo will be great with or without annoying Mr. Bayou stereotype. (I just called Ariel to read her my blog post and she started laughing when I read this …

Lookie at my Cookies: Cake Balls

What do you do when you break a cake into a million pieces because the cake got stuck in the pan because you were too lazy to parchment paper the bottom? Make Cake Balls! If you’re like me first you will freak out for about a minute and a half, but then eat a piece of the broken cake, and move onto cake balls. Equally as delicious and a hundred times easier. I recently destroyed a cake layer while making my good friend Anjali’s birthday cake. After suffering through the initial disappointment of flipping over my cake pan and nothing coming out, I decided I had two paths to take from here. Freak out and have a mental break down over my destroyed cake because it was after midnight, I was tired, and had to work the next morning; OR I could make cake balls and eat a few pieces of the cake too. Just because it breaks in a million ugly pieces doesn’t mean it doesn’t taste good!I adapted a recipe from Bakerella who …

July’s Daring Bakers Challenge: COOKIES!

The July Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Nicole at Sweet Tooth. She choseChocolate Covered Marshmallow Cookies and Milan Cookies from pastry chef Gale Gand of the Food Network. Another DB Challenge marks another month in the Food Blog world for Nosh and Tell! Too bad I’m a little late posting this month’s challenge but better late than never, right? This month’s challenge was focused on cookies! Not just any cookies, but cookies that you would normally find in the grocery: Milan(os) and Mallow(mars). I put off baking these until the last minute because I was a little intimidated, as I normally am with the challenges, but again I had a great time with these! The challenge included both cookies but we had the option of making one or both. I chose to do both…rather unsuccessfully I might add! Tasty, but not executed perfectly. The Mallow cookies came out absolutely delicious. Having the homemade cookie base made a world of difference with these. I snuck a bite of just the plain cookie sans marshmallow and chocolate glaze and the cinnamon …
